MLK becomes official paid holiday for employees

Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2012 marked a happy day for Pacific students and faculty alike. While students had a three-day weekend, faculty and staff had enjoyed policy change that resulted in a paid holiday.

In January of 2011, President Lesley Hallick announced that Pacific University would be closed for classes and business to help facilitate the celebration of MLK Day. This added the day to the list of paid holidays.

Currently, most employees get one paid day off for MLK, Memorial, Independence and Labor Day. They also receive 2.5 days off for Thanksgiving break and seven consecutive work days off for winter break.

Regular and part-time employees are eligible for holiday pay if the holiday occurs when they would normally be scheduled to work.

In addition, “An employee must be in paid status the scheduled day before and after the holiday in order to receive holiday pay. If a holiday occurs when an employee is on vacation or approved paid family leave, that day will be counted as a holiday,” stated Michele Quint, the employment manager for Pacific’s Human Resources Department.

The news release was posted on Pacific University’s website. For more information on paid and unpaid holidays, read the release or contact the Human Resources Department by visiting www.pacificu.edu/hr.
