Campus Wellness teaches consent through 5k run

Hosted by the Campus Wellness Center, the 5k Consent Color Run emphasizes the importance of consent in all aspects of life.

The race is at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 4 and participants can check in at 9 a.m. For Pacific students, the cost to register for the race is $15. It will stay this price until the day of the race, and registration will stay open until the day before the race.

Proceeds from the 5k will go to the Sexual Assault Research Center (SARC). SARC gives a lot of different resources and information to sexual assault survivors, and it is currently located in Beaverton, Oregon. SARC also offers sexual assault prevention education to schools, nonprofit agencies, and communities.

Campus Wellness hosted a similar event like this two years ago on campus. Students just ran around campus, so it was a fairly small event. However, the people who participated enjoyed it so much Campus Wellness decided to bring it back and make it bigger. “We wanted to make it a bigger community event this year,” Campus Wellness educator Morkowski said. “Also, April is Sexual Assault Awareness month, so we wanted to acknowledge that as well.”

This year, the run will start and end on the UC patio but will go off campus in a loop that takes participants to the B Street trail. Registration tables and booths with music will be stationed on the patio as well.

Morkowski wanted participants to be able to choose if they wanted color on them. “We are able to add the concept of consent because color is being thrown at you,” Morkowski said. “We want to focus on the fact that you get to choose whether you want color thrown on you or not.”

As the student approaches each station, they have the choice of whether or not they get color thrown on them. “It should be a great time, rain or shine,” Morkowski said. “We are super excited to see a ton of people there.”
