SAAC looks to revamp annual banquet

At the end of each school year the Student Athletes Advisory Committee puts on an annual banquet to honor student athletes for all the hard work they put forth throughout the year, not only as athletes but more importantly as students.

Senior Jaquari People, who is the president of this organization, noticed how lack luster this event had been in prior years.

“We wanted to change it because it has been very by the books. Looking around more students, at least in my opinion, were on their phones and not really into the event that is supposed to celebrate their accomplishments,” People explained.

People and other SAAC members put their heads together and have a list of surprises in store for this year’s event.

Junior Allie Sims, the secretary of SAAC, mentioned one idea is to mirror the banquet to that of the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards, ESPY’S. Athletes would be nominated and students and coaches could vote on the different categories.

People stated that he has enlisted the help of the photography club, digital media and photography students as well to put together some kind of visual component. People did not want to give away too many details and spoil it.

The banquet will be one of the last events of the year for SAAC and new candidates will be announced at the banquet. People reflected back on his year as president.

“We have put on some great events and, although stressful, it has definitely been a good year, and I am going to really miss not doing it next year. Our SAAC group is built of great individuals who come constantly, read ideas and willing to work, so they make my job pretty easy,” People said.

The SAAC banquet will take place Tuesday May 10, at 6:30 p.m.
