New Assistant Editor shares his opinion

With athletics being such a big aspect of Pacific University, I am pleased to accept the position of assistant sports editor of the Pacific Index.

For those of you who have followed my work as a writer so far, I hope you have sensed how important sports are to me.

Being an athlete the majority of my life, I know what it is like to be on the field. I feel the experience I have from playing will help me accomplish the goals I have for bringing you the latest in campus sports.

With a new perspective, I am committed to covering news while creating an awareness of all the things Pacific University athletics are capable of.

Like I mentioned, athletics are one of the biggest parts of any school. Pacific is no different. With sports ranging from football, wrestling to lacrosse, Pacific houses 21 intercollegiate teams. That being said, a large part of the student body is made up of athletes.

As a whole, all who play sports at this school are known as student-athletes. This means academics and athletics are both equally important to Pacific. Athletes are encouraged to perform in the classroom just as they are on the field, sometimes more so.

It seems no matter what the context, there are always positive themes when speaking about the student-athletes at this school. On one end, they are just like everyone else. Above all they are students, studying the same material, taking the same tests, and listening to the same lectures day in and day out.

On the other hand, however, they are role models. They are told by coaches to represent their school in the classroom and on campus just as they would on the field.

When they put that jersey on, everything they do reflects the values of Pacific. By carrying out these same responsibilities elsewhere they are working to make Pacific a better place.

Just as they do their part to support Pacific, we need to do our part to support them.

A solid fan base is just as influential in any game as athletic ability is. With Pacific University athletics on the rise, there will no doubt be some highly competitive games next year. Having a high attendance can only aid teams in making the year a success.

Even though I think seeing the games firsthand is important, I look forward to bringing you the best of the action in each edition of the Index.

I speak for myself and the rest of the Index sports team when I say we are committed to finding the credible news stories in Pacific University sports.
