The track season is underway and the men’s track team is making great strides to be a major contender in the Northwest Conference.
There have been a few men’s track and field participants that have already made an impact this season.
In the first event of the season, Linfeild Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker on March 2 freshman Micheal Zane smoked the competition in the 100-meter with a time of 11.25. seconds. He placed second in the 200-meter with a time of 22.67 seconds.
Head coach Tim Boyce said that Zane did very well in his first meet and he looks forward to seeing how the rest of the freshmen do this season.
In the Pacific Lutheran University Invitational on March 10, a few men stood out. Sophomore Aaron Koford was the only Pacific thrower to place in the top five with a fourth place finish.
Boyce said that Koford is a talented and hardworking individual with a lot of strengths. He also said that Koford manages his time and resources well balancing track and field responsibilities with spring football practices.
Junior Michael Hunker posted a 3rd place finish in hurdles at the PLU invitational. Hunker finished the 110-meter in 15.91 seconds and the 400-meter in 58.89 seconds.
Boyce said Hunker is a top returning men’s hurdler and despite being injured he will have a successful season. He is one of the most talented hurdlers in the Northwest Conference, Boyce said. Hunker is working a full time job as well as being a student athlete.
Sophomore Kelson Kawai had a pair of fifth place finishes in jumps at the PLU invitational. Kawai cleared 6 feet in the high jump and 41 feet and 7.25 inches in the triple jump.
Boyce said that Kawai is a top returner in the high and triple jump. He has been training well and staying healthy according to Boyce.
Other men’s track participant to watch this season include Jerry Sanchez, Dan Flora and John Cushman said Boyce.
The men and women of the track team will be back in action on March 16 in the Pacific Preview at the Lincoln Stadium.
