{English version} The Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (OEDI) has had the opportunity to push for equity on campus by working with the Mexican Consulate in order to offer a scholarship for Mexican students and students with Mexican parents. Last year, out of 31 applicants, 10 were awarded this scholarship of $1,700 per student. This year, the scholarship award will be $1,800. Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) scholarships are scholarships that are given to Hispanic students who live in the U.S. and are low-income students. Jean Garcia, the Director of the Student Multicultural Center, and Narce Rodriguez, the Vice President of Student Affairs and the Chief of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion have worked with the Mexican Consulate for years. Therefore, a good relationship was established with the Mexican consulate. By submitting a proposal to the Mexican Consulate, they were able to make this opportunity happen for students at Pacific University.
“[She] wanted [Pacific] to be the first private institution within the state of Oregon to do this for our gente, and do this for our students,” Rodriguez shared. Last year was the first year that this scholarship was awarded. The Mexican Consulate gave Pacific $8,500 for scholarships. Because it was a matching fund, Pacific had $17,000 total for scholarships.
In order to be eligible for this scholarship, students must be low-income Mexican nationals. They must be able to provide the documentation to prove that they or their parents are from Mexico. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required, and students must be enrolled full-time. Students must apply by October 1st. The students who receive the scholarship are required to meet with Jean Garcia twice during a term. “It’s a way for us in our office at the Student Multicultural Center to be able to connect with our Latinx students and make sure that we’re providing supports for them,” said Garcia.

La Oficina de Equidad, Diversidad, e Inclusión Ofrece Becas para Estudiante Mexicanos de Bajos Ingresos
La Oficina de Equidad, Diversidad e Inclusión (OEDI) ha tenido la oportunidad de promover la equidad en el campus al trabajar con el Consulado de México para ofrecerles una beca a los estudiantes mexicanos o de padres mexicanos. El año pasado, de 31 solicitantes, 10 recibieron esta beca de $ 1,700 por estudiante. Este año, el premio de la beca será de $ 1,800. Las becas del Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME) son becas que se les dan a los estudiantes hispanos que viven en los E.E.U.U. y que son de bajos ingresos. Jean García, Directora del Centro Estudiantil Multicultural, y Narce Rodríguez, Vicepresidenta de Asuntos Estudiantiles y Jefa de Equidad, Diversidad, e Inclusión han trabajado con el Consulado de México durante años . Por lo tanto, se estableció una buena relación con el Consulado de México. Al presentar una propuesta al Consulado de México, pudieron hacer realidad esta oportunidad para los estudiantes de Pacific University.
“[Ella] quería que [Pacific fuera] la primera institución privada en el estado de Oregon en hacer esto por nuestra gente y hacer esto por nuestros estudiantes”, compartió Rodríguez. Para ser elegible para esta beca, los estudiantes deben ser ciudadanos mexicanos de bajos ingresos. Deben poder aportar la documentación que acredite que ellos o sus padres son de México. Se requiere un GPA mínimo de 2.5 y los estudiantes deben estar matriculados a tiempo completo. Los estudiantes deben presentar su solicitud antes del 1 de octubre. Los estudiantes que reciben la beca deben reunirse con Jean García dos veces durante un período. “Es una forma de que nosotros en nuestra oficina en el Centro Multicultural Estudiantil podamos conectarnos con nuestros estudiantes latinx y asegurarnos de que les estamos brindando apoyo”, dijo García.
