Director says farewell to financial aid office

Pacific University is saying goodbye to a key member of the financial aid office this semester, Director of Financial Aid Mike Johnson.

Johnson has worked at Pacific for fifteen of the past nineteen years, starting his first term of employment here in 1995 as the Assistant Director before being promoted to Director in 1998. In addition to Pacific, he has also worked with Clark College and and the Northwest Education Loan Association, or NELA.

From Pacific, Johnson is heading to Portland State University where he was formerly a financial aid counselor. This time around, he will be Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

“It’s a great chance for me to advance as a professional,” he said.

Although he doesn’t interact much with students while working in his position, he said he still tried his best to make sure students are getting the most out of their education. In the course of his work, he creates and implements the procedures and regulations that keep the financial aid office running smoothly, so that Pacific students can receive the financial aid that allows many to come here.

Johnson, who lives locally with his wife, will still remain in the area, commuting into downtown Portland for work.

He said that this will still keep him at least somewhat close to the Pacific community he has become a part of over the years.

“The best thing about working at Pacific is the people, my colleagues and coworkers,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s successor has yet to be announced. At the time of publication, a spokesperson for the Human Resources department could not be reached for comment.
